At the origins
The Monaco E-Prix joined the Formula E calendar with its first edition held on May 9, 2015, an event presented by the Automobile Club of Monaco as a landmark moment for the sport, since Monaco was hosting one of the first major European rounds of the championship. The Principality immediately adopted a spectacular urban format, right by the harbor, and the race offered a new interpretation of the Monaco Circuit in a 100% electric context.
In its early years, the event followed a deliberately spaced schedule, with editions in 2015, then 2017, 2019, and 2021. This step-by-step progression accompanied the rise of Formula E and allowed Monaco to gradually establish the E-Prix as one of its major sporting highlights.
From the “E-Prix Layout” to the Full Monaco Circuit
During the first editions, Formula E opted for a shortened, very compact layout to create an intense race right by the harbor: a circuit of approximately 1.76 km with 12 turns, designed as a condensed version of Monaco.
Then, with the rise of the sport, the Monaco E-Prix reached a new milestone: since 2021, the race has been held on the full Monaco Circuit, 3.337 km long and featuring 19 turns. This symbolic evolution places Formula E across all the iconic sectors, from Sainte-Dévote to the Casino Square, Mirabeau, the Grand Hotel hairpin, Portier, and the tunnel.
The Transition to an Annual Event
Until 2021, the Monaco E-Prix followed a biennial schedule. In June 2021, following decisions by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, the race switched to an annual format: Monaco was confirmed on the 2021/2022 calendar, and the organizers officially announced the transition from a biennial event to a yearly fixture.
