What is MIPIM?
MIPIM or IMREP (International Market for Real Estate Professionals) is an international event presented as the “Global Urban Festival”: a platform where decision-makers, territories, and private stakeholders come together to exchange ideas, showcase projects, and debate the issues shaping the city.
In practical terms, the event revolves around three main pillars: an exhibition area, a conference program, and dedicated networking sessions. Everything comes together with one simple goal: to create, in just a few days, a concentrated hub of meetings and opportunities on an international scale.
Key Figures (At a Glance)
To grasp the scale of MIPIM, the organizers share telling figures (2025 data): over 20,000 participants, around 90 countries represented, and more than 300 stands. They also report 19,300 m² of exhibition space, along with approximately €4 trillion in assets managed by attending investors.
A history of MIPIM
MIPIM was created in Cannes in 1990 (originally organized by Reed MIDEM, now RX). From its very first edition, the event demonstrated international ambition, attracting several thousand participants and hundreds of companies from numerous countries.
As early as the following year, in 1991, a key milestone was added: the creation of the MIPIM Awards, which highlight outstanding projects and help establish the event as a platform for recognition and international showcase.
Over the years, the format has continued to diversify (with, for example, awards dedicated to “future” projects starting in 2002), and MIPIM has gradually established itself as an annual landmark event where projects, capital, and urban strategies intersect—still held in Cannes.
MIPIM Over the Years
Since its beginnings in the early 1990s, MIPIM has gradually scaled up. The event is no longer just a showcase for projects; it has become a place where, over the course of a few days, investment strategies, urban development visions, and long-term decisions intersect. Cannes serves as a “meeting point”—a space for comparing, making choices, and, above all, connecting, all within a highly condensed format.
This rise in prominence is also reflected in the diversity of attendees. Over time, MIPIM has attracted more territories (cities, metropolitan areas, regions) that come to showcase their appeal, alongside private sector players looking to identify opportunities, form partnerships, and stay informed on major market trends. The event has thus taken on a broader scope: discussions cover not only buildings, but also cities, uses, and transformation.
Key Emerging Themes
As urban challenges have evolved, the scope of MIPIM has naturally expanded. Discussions no longer focus solely on construction and transactions; they now encompass topics such as sustainability, renovation and transformation of existing buildings, urban resilience, and new uses (offices, retail, housing, and mixed-use developments). At the same time, technology and data have taken on a greater role, particularly in how real estate assets are designed, managed, and optimized.
As a result, MIPIM has established itself as a barometer of the sector’s priorities. From one year to the next, it reveals emerging trends, confirmed shifts, and how both public and private stakeholders are adjusting their ambitions and approaches.
